Meet JJ!

Meet Our 2025 Vision Screening Ambassador: Juan-Jose ‘JJ’!
He has the glasses, the charm, and the Spidey senses to match!

We are thrilled to introduce our 2025 Vision Screening Ambassador: Juan-Jose “JJ”—a bright, energetic 5-year-old who loves to swim, craft, and play outside with his sisters. Today, thanks to early intervention, JJ is seeing the world more clearly than ever before.

JJ’s journey with glasses began like that of many children: unexpectedly. During a Prevent Blindness Wisconsin vision screening in his 4K class at Nativity Jesuit Academy, JJ did not pass his vision screening. His parents were surprised. At home and in school, there were no major warning signs—JJ was not squinting or struggling academically. He was thriving: naming colors, recognizing shapes, and fully engaging with the world around him.

But the vision screening told a different story.

JJ struggled during his vision screening and did not pass in either eye. Out of caution and care, his family scheduled an eye exam—and they were glad they did. The doctor diagnosed JJ with hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism in both eyes.

Looking back, there had been subtle clues. JJ was often clumsy and sometimes could not recognize other children at the pool—occasionally mistaking them for his sisters. Now, with the right prescription glasses, JJ’s world is sharper and brighter. He swims with confidence, runs with fewer stumbles, and embraces every day with the superpower of clear sight.

Although adjusting to glasses took time, the difference was undeniable. At first, JJ would get very close to books and toys to see them. Today, he proudly wears his glasses without reminders. In fact, he asks for them!

JJ’s stylish grey glasses with a pop of green help him see clearly—and even better; they match his mom, dad, and older sister, who also wear glasses. He can now read with ease, recognize faces from across the playground, and explore the world with confidence.

JJ is full of energy and joy. He loves the color yellow, is a huge fan of Spidey and His Amazing Friends and has a sweet spot for candy. He enjoys spending time outdoors with his four sisters (soon to be five!) and is always up for making crafts or splashing in the pool.

JJ’s story is a powerful reminder of how vital school vision screenings are. Thanks to his early vision screening at Nativity Jesuit Academy, JJ now has the tools he needs to succeed and thrive.

We are proud to have JJ as our 2025 Vision Screening Ambassador. With his help, we will continue spreading the message that early detection changes lives. Together, we can help more children across Wisconsin see clearly and reach their full potential—just like JJ.
