Volunteer

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Prevent Blindness Wisconsin! Our sight saving work is made possible by current and future VOLUNTEERS like you! There are many volunteer opportunities available for both individuals and groups that help support Prevent Blindness Wisconsin.

As a Prevent Blindness Wisconsin volunteer, there are a wide-range of volunteer opportunities available such as becoming a certified vision screener, assisting at special events or participating in other ways that help us achieve our mission of ensuring each Wisconsin resident has healthy vision at every stage of life.

All volunteers are required to fill out a background check.

Children's Vision Screener

Children Vision Screeners will conduct vision screenings at preschools or childcare centers, schools, and in community settings. Upon completing the three-year Certified Children’s Vision Screening Training, participants will be matched with a volunteer group located closest to your home. You will assist in providing free, certified vision screenings to children in your community. Children’s Vision Screeners impact the lives of children with each screening they complete.

“It all makes sense now. Elijah always kept saying, ‘Mom there is something in my eye, so when he didn’t pass his vision screening at school, it all came together for me.’ When we went in for his eye exam, he was so confident with his right eye, however, when they tested his left eye, he got very frustrated. I feel better knowing what Elijah’s needs are and what we have to do to help him see the world clearly. I would highly recommend a children’s vision screening to anyone with preschool-aged children. They can catch problems you didn’t know were there and even catch concerns before there is permanent changes in their vision—concerns that could have effects and influence their lives moving forward.”

Adult Certified Vision Screeners will be educated on the importance of regular eye exams, evaluating the results of screenings, and conducting vision follow-up processes. Training participants will learn about risk factors for common eye diseases, distance vision acuity tests, near vision acuity tests, exit interviews to interpret results for the person who is screened.
