Claire is a typical four-year-old who loves pink and playing with her siblings. As she never held books or toys close to her face when playing and reading, her parents never suspected Claire had a vision problem. After Claire did not pass a volunteer vision screening at her preschool, she was referred to further care. Claire was diagnosed with amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (crossed eye) and was prescribed a pair of glasses and patching regimen. Claire now wears her pink glasses and pink eye patch and her mom, Shelly, can see the difference her glasses make. Shelly says, “The screening indicated an issue we were unaware of. We felt terrible at first – how could we have missed it? But now we know we are correcting her vision and taking care to do all we can for healthy vision.” We are so happy Claire has the glasses she needs to see and learn. We Welcome You Back To The Ice! Vision Screenings for School Success For many children with a vision problem, correction is as simple as a pair of prescription glasses and has an incredible impact on their success in the classroom and beyond. Research has shown that just six weeks of vision correction can improve a child’s standardized tests scores to match the scores of their peers who do not have a vision problem (Roch-Levecq A, Arch Ophthal 2008). A comprehensive vision screening program is important for students success in school. Prevent Blindness Wisconsin has tools to help you start or strengthen your vision screening program. Our Vision Screening Toolkits offer resources to plan, implement, and follow-up on vision screenings. Our Children’s Vision Screener Trainings certify you as a Children’s Vision Screener. For any other questions regarding children’s vision screening, please contact Shelby at S[email protected]. Are you currently a Certified Adult Vision Screener? Are you interested in volunteering and becoming a certified screener? Prevent Blindness Wisconsin is looking for Certified Adult Vision Screeners and volunteers interested in becoming certified to help vision screen adults at United Way of Greater Milwaukee and Waukesha County’s Project Homeless Connect Outreach Events. If you are interested in becoming certified or able to volunteer at Project Homeless Connect, please contact Courtney at [email protected] or call 414-765-0505 Ext. 109. September is Sports Eye and Safety Awareness Month September is Sports Eye and Safety Awareness Month. Over 25,000 people need treatment for eye injuries related to sports each year, yet most of these injuries are preventable. Sports-related eye injuries occur in a wide range of sports and are the number one cause of blindness in children. Before enrolling your child in a sports program, be sure to equip them with the necessary protective gear. Prevent Sports-Related Eye Injuries • Be aware that regular glasses will not provide enough protection when playing sports. • Wear proper safety goggles while playing sports. These should be labeled as ASTM F803 approved. • Use polycarbonate face shields or glasses when needed. • Use helmets and face shields approved for your individual sport to make sure you are receiving the proper amount of protection. • Before enrolling your child in a sports program, speak with an eye doctor about protective eyewear recommendations. • Communication about procedures in place that deal with children’s eye injuries should occur between coaches and parents. • Parents, teachers, nurses, and coaches should be familiar with the warning signs of a severe eye injury and know the right time to seek treatment.
