Fy-Eye April 2018

PBWI small FY-Eye: April 2018

April is National Volunteer Month!

Volunteer 1 Volunteer 2

Prevent Blindness Wisconsin extends a heartfelt “thank you” to all of our volunteer vision screeners during National Volunteer Month. At each and every screening, our volunteers make a difference by identifying children with potential vision problems and setting them on the path to healthy vision. On behalf of the thousands of children you serve, thank you, volunteer screeners!

“It’s easy to say ‘it’s not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.’ Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes.” –Mister Rogers

Adult Programs

This past February, the Milwaukee VA hosted the Milwaukee Veterans Stand Down, an event held twice a year, giving homeless and at risk veterans assistance with their current needs. UW-Milwaukee students volunteered their time to vision screen veterans at this event. 41 veterans were vision screened and 38 were referred for a complete eye exam. We want to thank the Milwaukee VA for hosting this event and UW-Milwaukee students for taking time to volunteer and vision screen those who have served our country and sacrificed so much.

Success Story: Keegan

4-year-old Keegan was screened at his preschool in Cadott. After his mother took him to the eye doctor, he was diagnosed with amblyopia and strabismus. Keegan was prescribed glasses and a patching regimen to strengthen his left eye. Keegan’s mom is thankful for the Prevent Blindness Wisconsin certified vision screening that caught his vision problem at an early, treatable age. Keegan loves his new glasses, and reading and coloring are much easier now.

If you know of other families with stories to share, please see our Success Story Questionnaire! As a thank you for their story and a picture, Prevent Blindness Wisconsin will provide the family with a free vision-related book.

Where there’s a need, there’s a Lion

Keep up the great work! Since April 1, 2017, Wisconsin Lions and Lioness have reported screening over 107,000 children and referring over 10,000 of those children to the eye doctor. Thank you for all of your dedication and hard work! As a reminder, please continue to submit your vision screening numbers to your district vision screening chair using the Lion’s vision screening reporting form shortly after screening.

Help referred children get the vision care they need after their vision screening. Please consider asking your contact at the screening location if they are in need of any assistance throughout the follow-up process.

Toolkit Reminder:

Prevent Blindness Wisconsin has a vision screening toolkit dedicated to Lions and Lioness! Check it out for great vision screening tools and resources.

Come Say “Hi” at 2018 WASN Spring Conference!

Prevent Blindness Wisconsin will be at the Wisconsin Association of School Nurses Spring Conference, April 18-20. Attend the Certified Children’s Vision Screener Training with Valerie on Wednesday, April 18, visit the Prevent Blindness Wisconsin booth in the Exhibit Hall on Thursday, and attend Executive Director, Tami Radwill’s breakout session, “Seeing Past Screening Day: Your Important Role in Vision Screening, Follow-Up Care, and Making Healthy Vision a Priority in Your School Community” on Friday, April 20. We will also be unveiling our NEW Vision and Eye Health Curriculum for 3K/4K, 5K, and 5th Grade as well as follow-up resources at the conference. Hope to see you there!

Head Start Numbers Request

Tracking Children’s Vision Screening numbers is very important. Please share the number of children screened, referred, and any outcomes for your program as soon as possible. We’ve already received reports of 7,000 Head Start vision screenings and would love to hear that all 16,000 children in Head Start received screenings! Please use the annual statistical request form in the Head Start Vision Screening Toolkit to report your vision screening numbers. Sharing your numbers helps us to know when children, like Axl, get to care. Axl has opened up more and is more talkative in groups now that he has his glasses!

Public Education: Workplace Safety

The computer screen below is a common view for many people working in an office setting.

When it comes to work safety, many think of wearing safety glasses and keeping harmful chemicals away from their eyes. But what about safety from your computer screen? There may not be any flying debris, or splashes occurring, but light emitted from your computer screen can have a negative effect on your vision.

No matter what your work environment is, take care of your vision health and practice proper eye safety. Click here to learn more
