Eagles Charitable Foundation Hosts 7th Annual Professional Development Meeting for Philadelphia School Nurses

More than 250 nurses will be in attendance to receive their vision screening certifications

Studies indicate that about one in four school-aged children have a vision problem that requires treatment and that 70 percent of public school students who fail their state-mandated eye screenings do not receive the necessary follow-up care. While it is mandatory that every student receives a vision screening in the state of Pennsylvania each year, it is not required that the individuals conducting the screenings be certified which leads to poor uniformity in screening procedures and monitoring student vision health.

On Friday, September 1st, Eagles Charitable Foundation will ensure that 260 nurses from Philadelphia are properly trained and certified to administer vision screenings at the 7th annual School Nurse Professional Development Meeting. Hosted at Lincoln Financial Field from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm, nurses will rotate as a group through various skills assessment sessions and receive extensive, in-depth training to certify them as vision screeners. Upon completion of both an online educational module and an in-person skill assessment, each nurse will receive a national vision screening certification valid for three years.

Sponsored by the Independence Blue Cross Foundation, the School Nurse Professional Development Meeting has secured Prevent Blindness – the nation’s leading volunteer eye health and safety organization – to administer the vision screening training and certification.
