The majority of Catholic schools within the Archdiocese of Milwaukee do not have a school nurse, who is often the school staff member responsible for vision screening. In order to address this need, Prevent Blindness Wisconsin created the Star Pupils Catholic Program. Community volunteers, parent volunteers, and volunteers from the Christ Child Society of Milwaukee comprise the Star Pupils Catholic program. These volunteers receive training and certification through Prevent Blindness Wisconsin and are provided with the necessary materials and paperwork to vision screen at Catholic schools in their community.
In 2016, Prevent Blindness Wisconsin was excited to form a new partnership with the Christ Child Society of Milwaukee to expand our impact to Catholic Schools. Prevent Blindness Wisconsin now holds two vision screener trainings per year specifically for Catholic school staff. Schools that send at least two staff members to a training will receive a free vision screening kit courtesy of the Christ Child Society so they can continue to screen within their schools.
