Five year old Nicholas Hall received a vision screening recently at his YMCA daycare center. His mother Chelsea says: “I am so happy these volunteer screeners came in to give [vision screenings]. I had no idea that Nicholas had a hard time seeing. Luckily we now have new glasses so he can now see in school and advance his learning.”  Nicholas had never worn glasses before he was screened by volunteer vision screeners from Prevent Blindness Wisconsin.

Yet after his screening his mom took him to an eye doctor for a complete exam and Nicholas was diagnosed with astigmatism in both eyes. Says mom Chelsea, “Nicholas can finally see the chalkboard and actually see pictures during story time!” ~Chelsea

"I want to thank you again for coming and speaking in Patty Kauffman's nursing classes this semester.  Because of the presentation you gave and information that was learned, we were able to detect that our oldest son was having problems seeing at school.  We were able to take him in to the optomologist and get him fitted for the glasses he needs.  And it all started with headaches.  So thank you!!!!" ~Jamie L. Bohacek

"Jack attended preschool at the CCC in Menomonee Falls.  In May of 2013, when he was three, he had a vision exam at the preschool.  We were notified in writing that he failed his vision exam and that we should contact our pediatrician.  I called his doctor.  The nurse asked me if he was complaining of vision problems, squinting or bumping into things.  He didn’t complain and we didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary.  We were told to wait for his 4 year wellness visit that would be in August.  About two weeks prior to his appointment, Jack’s dad, Eric, thought he noticed his left eye go in.  I’d look at his eye without drawing attention to it but never noticed anything.  We went to his appointment and the nurse took him in a room to do a routine vision screening.  We both noticed that he wasn’t doing a good job covering his eye but it was attributed to his age and said his vision looked good.  The doctor did her exam along with a resident.  It was at the end of the appointment when our pediatrician asked the resident if she “saw that.”  Because they were looking at his face, I asked if it was his eye.  She said yes.  I then mentioned how Eric had thought he had seen his eye go in.  She referred us to Children’s.  He was diagnosed with strabismus and amblyopia and was almost legally blind in his left eye.  Right eye is 20/20.  Three years later, Jack still wears glasses and we still patch his right eye daily for three to four hours.  His left eye is 20/20 +1.  We follow-up with Dr. Ruttum every three months." ~Jennifer Nielsen

"I was legally blind – well over  20/200. I wore contact lenses constantly and for long hours because I couldn’t be without them. I commute to work 54 miles (one way) so often my contacts became a problem while driving. Because of the vision screening, I was diagnosed with cataracts. I received lens implants and now I see 20/25 without contacts. Thanks to Prevent Blindness Wisconsin, my vision was restored!"  ~Richard Lowe

"Prevent Blindess Wisconsin was a life saver as I needed prescription glasses for distance as I could not drive in the dark nor could I read up close.  It was extremely challenging. I do not have insurance coverage nor am I currently employed so having the opportunity to receive a complimentary eye exam as well as glasses to improve my vision made me delighted to say the least.

Kelly K. was the young lady who assisted me from start to finish providing information about the eye program.  She was polite and extremely professional.

Kelly went over and beyond ensuring that my eye program gift certificate was made available immediately.  With that being said, I was able to get my eye exam the same day and received my eye glasses in record speed.

Thank you Kelly as well as Prevent Blindness Wisconsin!!!  Without your excellent customer service, generosity and commitment to preventing blindnesses I still would not be able to see very well....

Keep up the good work!" ~ Milwaukee, WI

"This program helped me get new glasses when I really needed them. It was very hard for me to get a pair of glasses for a fair price with no insurance. Also got a stronger prescription this program is very helpful."  ~Brian Townsend, Jr.
