Prevent Blindness Wisconsin and Wisconsin Vision have been honored with the Milwaukee Board of School Directors Excellence in Education Award for providing free vision screenings and glasses for MPS students. Nearly 500 children at Clarke Street School and Gwen T. Jackson Early Childhood School received free vision screenings from Wisconsin Vision and Marquette University volunteers trained by Prevent Blindness Wisconsin. Just days later Wisconsin Vision provided free refractive exams and glasses manufactured right at the schools for children who failed the screenings. Danny Gokey, who is an MPS graduate of Vincent High School, also visited the schools on glasses day. Milwaukee Board of School Directors noted, “Prevent Blindness Wisconsin and Wisconsin Vision have the can-do spirit and commitment that helps support children and families. Children that can see become children that can read, and children that can read have the whole world opened up for them. The Milwaukee Board of School Directors and the entire school community recognize Prevent Blindness Wisconsin and Wisconsin Vision for dedication and commitment to excellence on behalf of the students and staff of the Milwaukee Public Schools.”
